The High Sign -- Book Review
A Very Strong Possibility Not To Be Ignored
The High Sign
Author: David S. Heeren
Publisher: Self-published, Coppell, Texas, 2015
When it comes to the occasion of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, David S. Heeren has written a book that is difficult to argue with. He has a premise which he describes clearly and defends thoroughly from both a scientific and a scriptural perspective. But he wins many of us over simply because beyond wanting us to understand where he is coming from, he does not, in my opinion, push his theory on us nor is he adamant that he is one hundred per cent correct. He knows the limitations that Jesus Himself put on the preciseness of such knowledge. He approaches the topic with great caution as he knows that “no man knows the time” of Christ’s return.
Heeren is a Bible scholar that wants us to focus on understanding and recognizing the celestial sign he believes will announce the return of Christ. He is an award-winning journalist and author of 17 books. He used his background in mathematics and logic to create Tendex, the first internationally used statistical system for rating professional and college basketball players. Nine of his books have Christian themes. In short, he’s no “fly by night” type of author and you’ll appreciate the research he does for this one.
Readers who value scripture as the Word of God and, also believe that God is fully in charge of the natural world and its laws that He Himself created and put into operation, will be astounded by Heeren’s approach to the topic. In The High Sign, he compellingly shows us 200 pieces of evidence with respect to twenty-four events that are given to us in the Bible that support his premise.
His premise is that the return of Jesus Christ will be heralded by the presence of a comet. While there are 200 signs that support that, he contends that there isn’t a single contradictory piece of evidence that he has found in studying this subject for sixteen years.
In his book, he shows that there are definite astronomical connections between the Flood of Noah, the demolition of Sodom, the plagues of the Exodus, and our main event of interest – the Second Coming of Christ. He takes us through various Biblical events showing us how a comet was involved, something I found fascinating. He also considers the events of Job in their proper chronological order, that is, at the same time that the events of Sodom and Gomorrah occurred. Those who own a Chronological version of the Bible will appreciate that.
And there’s more to garner from the book. I learned things about the great Chicago fire that I never knew. Hint, there’s more to it than just Mrs. O’Leary. Did Moses get upset about a golden calf or was it a bull? He explains quite satisfactorily how the plagues that befell Egypt took place, connecting the first nine to comet activity at the time. Later in the book, you’ll find his explanation of what happened scientifically as Moses struck the rock to get water.
While the book provides a very helpful section of key points at the end of each chapter, it would, in my opinion, benefit greatly from both a Table of Contents and an Index. Let’s hope he adds those in future editions of the book. To my surprise, he also uses the Apocrypha with excellent rationale that even I could not object to. And then of course he also relies on support from non-Biblical/Christian sources as well. Also of great benefit is a section of seven things for Christians to do to prepare for the Day of the Lord (or the Return of Christ).
Heeren makes very good use of Scriptural text. For those that believe in the existence of God and that He is in charge of the natural world and its laws, he reminds us that a comet is indeed a very natural phenomenon. The author writes in a style that suits a non-PhD holder like me very well. He does not present himself as a know-it-all. In fact, there’s a place in the book where he asks the reader if he is “stepping over the bounds of credibility”.
There is no doubt that Scripture is full of many verses regarding catastrophe coming to earth from the heavens and Heeren does a great job of sharing those with us.
I highly recommend the book both for those who know their Bible and would like a very plausible action plan for the Day of the Lord and for those that are just curious about what they may have heard about the end times.
