The Latest From LIbya - Mess Times Two

Rebels ask for ceasefire and for Gaddafi to withdraw from numerous cities. Gaddafi says, "this is nuts and they're nuts". And I'd have to agree with him on that. Why would a leader who seems to be winning the war agree to terms like that? Especially since all the key allies have said openly "no boots on the ground" and "no arms for the rebels". What does he have to fear? Absolutely nothing.

Great job America. You've really botched this one up so far, Mr. B.O. and Mr. Gates.

And oh, by the way, Gaddafi's troops outnumber the rebels it is believed (by US intelligence) about ten to one. And add to the that the fact that the rebels are inexperienced, untrained, and don't have nearly the military weapons that the Government has. Yes, they have airstrikes but those are pretty limited as well.

The people and their flimsy supporters are in for a long war or a lost war. But you take a look at the video and read the account from Al Jazeera -- a perspective you won't hear on CNN.

An Article in a Time CNN blog says real war with Libya Looms.

Here's a well-written and thoughtful analysis as to why the U.N. resolution may be too little, too late. Two weeks ago it may have worked, but now Gaddafi has almost all his country back under his control. To beat him now, may well mean ground conflict.   No-fly now has to include "no-drive zone" as well to succeed.

Add to that the fact that at least China, Germany, and Russia abstained from the vote as they were against it. So, there's no total European or Asian support to take Gaddafi out.

One U.S. veteran (Afghanistan and Iraq wars) fears we're headed to war with yet another Muslim country. And he may well be right. Read the article from the link and decide for yourself.

The Latest on Libya . . . Not Good for Anyone

I am not certain of how the West can simply stand by. If there ever was an act that shows, "protect your behind and worry more about the aftermath of bad opposing public opinion rather than do the right thing now to save lives", this do-nothing attitude of the major western powers is it. Take a look for yourself -- but remember you are reading it from a liberal perspective in the New York Times. So, read with a grain of salt in some cases. (e.g. notice they can quote the person fighting Qaddafi by name that wants the No-fly zone, etc., but only give an opposing view without a name to the other individual. That kind of writing makes one wonder what was really said and what is editorializing for 'preferred' balance by the writer or his/her publisher. Anyway, you decide.

An excellent article from the Telegraph in London, England. Lots of history and lots of data. The key point is "intervention" is inevitable. Now can we please get on with the timetable. Meanwhile, back in America -- it appears B.O. and his key players on not on the same page -- first among themselves, and secondly, with the leaders of the pack -- the U.K. and France. (Is it any wonder the Approval rate of B.O. has dropped to equal his Disapproval Rate -- see earlier blog.)

Will a No-fly Zone really work in Libya?

This is a great analysis on this subject. But more than that, it explains clearly why the U.S. is hamstrung in taking any meaningful action. The reality is this: the real opponents to the U.S. helping the people of Libya is 1) the logistics are against them, 2) the international community cannot be counted on to support them, before, during, and especially afterwards, 3) the reality is that ground military operations is what is needed, 4) a good number of Americans are dead against it, and 5) history seems to indicate, once in, hard to get out, never mind costs.

Musing on March 1, 2011

1.  A good verse for those in troubled lands and waters today:  Psalm 19:11 says, "The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace."  We can be sure of that.  Ultimately His people will be strengthened and blessed with peace.  It may be the very verse you and I need today.

2.  More Anti-Church Thinking:  If you go to this link, http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=269337 , you will find a story about how the U.S. Federal government (or its agents) now are going after a church that meets the needs of the poor, hungry and homeless because -- wait for it -- it supposedly is too "untidy" and therefore "can't possibly be a church".  So, it must loose its tax exempt status.  Now, I'm not vouching for the church -- I do not know what is going on there, but this argument seems to be a little lame.   (They should be spending their time and efforts looking at restaurants and health places to see if they're all neat and tidy enough to qualify as such, instead of going after churches for that reason.)  I'd love to hear your take on this.

3.  No-fly Zone Over Libya or Around Libya:  Senior U.S. military man testifies that any attempt to enforce a 'no-fly' zone w.r.t. to Libya will definitely involve "combat" if it is to succeed.  That is, in order to prevent a country from flying it's planes, you need to first destroy its land-to-air defense system.  So, nice try, U.S., but your own people are saying that "half-hearted" threat strategies don't work.  Back to the drawing boards.  Let's see how else you can show how your influence is waning fast.  Apparently, even your buddy CNN implies you ain't got what it takes any longer -- or if you did, you'd show it.   Clinton seems you can be the hero by just being around and maintaining a presence in the Middle East (to stop the progressive rise of Iran), but the Yemen President just told you to mind your own business.   It's tough being the U.S.
