Baby Doc Duvalier: Is it about the money? 4.6 Million of It

According to a guest on CNN, one of the possible leading reasons for Duvalier to come back to Haiti and assuming he does not run for office is simply this:  Baby Doc has 4.6 Million dollars (U.S. equivalent -- I know it's worth what it used to be when he got it, but nonetheless, bear with me here) in a Swiss Bank Account.   Under the new rules, a person has to prove that he won't be charged when there are accusations against him in any country, before he can get that money.

So, Baby Doc Duvalier has until February the 1st to prove that and apply for his money.  That's about a week from now.  So, we'll need to watch this development carefully.  If he can stay long enough and not get charged, he can leave and get his money, poor man.  If he gets charged, he loses his money.  Simple.

HERE'S the rub.  What if he is making a deal with local officials not to be charged in exchange for some of the money he will then get access to?  Is this a possibility?  I don't know; you tell me.   What country did we say this was in?   I'm sure more to come.

Unbelievable -- Baby Doc Duvalier Offers Regret

I do believe in forgiveness. We all should. When one asks for it, it should come after they have repented. And forgiveness does not replace the consequence of the wrong committed. Somebody still needs to pay the penalty. It just means the person you've hurt will not go on hating you but the recompense is still required -- either by the forgiver or the forgiven. In most cases today, it will be the forgiven that still pays the price. That's the way the system works.

[Only in God's economy, does the Forgiver pay the price. You can ask me about that, if you're not sure where I'm coming from.] In the meantime, enjoy this bit of 'unbelievable news'. 

It will be very interesting to see whether he makes a play for re-election or leadership and what the Haitian people will do in response.

Visions of Grandeur -- First 'Baby Doc' and now Aristide -- Here's the Plan

Okay, we finally can shed some light on the situation in Haiti. Baby Doc Duvalier is become and hopes to regain the presidency. How's that you say? Hasn't he just been charged with a myriad of atrocities? Yes, but his people are already saying they've read the laws of the land and there's a statute of limitations. That is, since they didn't charge him in ten years, nothing will stand now. Interesting. Atrocities may be forgiven if that's true. We'll wait and see.

But wait, there's more. Now, according the same AlJazeera article, "Jean-Bertrand Aristide, another former Haitian president, announced on Wednesday that he too would be returning to the country shortly."

A comedy of errors. Shakespeare would have had fun with this. He could have called the play, "The Two Gentlemen of Haiti". Sad.

'Baby Doc' Duvalier charged in Haiti

Okay, the guy is away in exile; after a couple of decades he decides to come home (in the middle of chaos in the country) and easily walks into the "hands" of the authorities -- I mean, did he really think this would not happen? Of course, he knew it would. The question to ask ourselves is "why?" -- Why did he do this and what's in it for him? Read the details. We can surmise about the reasons, but it will be best to just wait and see. In the meantime, Haiti continues to be emerging as a another political 'hotspot'.

What a Time For a Former Dictator To Return to Hiati

And will he face charges and a trial for the deaths of thousands 25 years ago? Some people have no sense of timing. Some people never know when to quit. This does not bode well for the future of Haiti and its recovery. A step backwards for sure.
