God is NOT Happy (book review)

I agreed to review this book because I was challenged by the title.  Just how could anyone speak for God, let alone categorically decide that He was “NOT Happy”? What would make someone say that? And even if the author were right, what would telling us really accomplish? Isn’t life tough enough already without having to worry about whether God was happy or not? I could just hear many saying, “Hey look, I’m not happy – why should God be any different.”

Flo Taber-Brown shares her observations very poignantly and explains her conclusion in her book, God is NOT Happy, published by Westbow Press, 2015. She takes issue with our North American (primarily the United States) culture, education, church practices, and our approach to missions as the chief causes of God’s unhappiness and she backs up her arguments for each using relevant portions of God’s own words from Scriptures. You can’t argue with that. And in fact, I did not.

Taber-Brown’s common thread that she weaves through each of her chapters as she tackles the various causes is this: fix it or God won’t keep making His leniency available for long. In fact, if He stays true to form with how He treated His chosen people in the Old Testament, He will use other ungodly political and military powers to destroy us. The only two questions that remain for Taber-Brown are “When?” and “Whom will He use?” (What nation; what power; what driving force).

As I read her book, I often found myself angry at her anger at us for just how badly we have messed things up. But perhaps that was as a result of my own feelings of guilt as I couldn’t deny the truth in many of her reflections. Her book is a quick (about 70 pages in all) and hard-hitting read. It would have benefited from more editing and that, for me at least, added to the frustration I was sensing when reading it. In addition, she speaks as a minister in her Anglican church and much of what she observes and refers to is indeed from an Anglican perspective and experience. Her recommendations as cures also come primarily from that outlook and as such, limit their application to only certain readers – as necessary as they may be.

But the hope she offers is for everyone – regardless of one’s denominational background. The author repeats what those who believe in God know to be true. In 2^nd Chronicles, chapter 7, verse 14, He told His chosen people, the Israelites: “If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” The question for us to discern is whether what He told them applies to us today?  Perhaps it does or perhaps not.

For me personally, there is no chance this side of heaven that what she calls for will happen collectively, such as in a nation or continent. We’re too far gone for that. And in fact, I believe Scripture actually speaks against it when it says, “The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard And it totters like a shack, For its transgression is heavy upon it, And it will fall, never to rise again.” (Isaiah 24:20)

Flo Taber-Brown’s identified hope still works, however, for the individual – for you and for me.  You and I may not be able to prevent God from punishing North America, but we can prevent Him for being “unhappy” with us.  Taber-Brown tells us how.

Why You Didn’t Ever Become . . . (fill in your own blank here) . . .

I’m continuing my reading of the American 1885 classic The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells, Penguin Classics, 1986.  Thus, I came across a most interesting statement about one of his characters, the now elderly Mr. Bromfield Corey.  Howells is commenting on Corey’s ability, when he was much younger, as a painter and says this:

. . . he might have made himself a name as a painter of portraits if he had not had so much money.  But he had plenty of money, though by this time he was married and beginning to have a family.  It was absurd for him to paint portraits for pay, and ridiculous to paint them for nothing; so he did not paint them at all.

As I read that, three thoughts came to mind.  First, that so many of us feel we never become what we may really have been good at.  Second, that I can distinctly remember what I thought I really wanted to do and likely would have been very good at and even the reason or reasons why I didn’t become any of those things.  And third, that sometimes the reason or reasons for us not to become what we could have or should have become is/are most inane.  Let me explain.

Many of us never become what we would have been really good at, or so it seems.  Why else would we so often hear, in the course of our lives, sentences that begin with “You should have been . . .”?  But I am not so sure about it being an actual fact that many of us don’t become what we would have been good at, especially these days when so many of us have at our disposable access to all sorts of experiences and education.  Sure, we often don’t become what we may have wanted to become, but is there actually any way of knowing whether we would have been good at that?  I don’t think so.  I think we become what we become due to many circumstances in life, opportunity among them.  But the issue of knowing what we really would have been good at is much more complex.  It has internally to do, among other things, with who we are – physically, emotionally, intellectually.  In fact, it has also to do externally with opportunity, money, and the lifestyle and values of our parents.  In fact, so multifaceted are the reasons we end up being who we are that we are almost induced to believe, as difficult as that may be in some cases, that what we actually end up being is what we are or could be best at.

Howells description of Corey’s ability as a painter brought back to my mind what I really thought I wanted to do when I was a youth and what I thought I likely would have been very good at, along with reasons why I didn’t become any of those things.  My earliest recollection was that I wanted to be a preacher like Billy Graham.  For one reason or another that didn’t last long, especially once I had discovered Ben Casey and Dr. Kildare on television.  That fantasy stayed with me a long time.  At least until I discovered that my grades were not conducive to medical school admission requirements.  I tried to rationalize the disqualification by avowing that I couldn’t stand the sight of blood anyway, unless it was in response to an emergency caused by a serious accident. (I actually had such an experience during my teenage years when we witnessed such an accident on the New York State Thruway once.  I managed to cover with a towel the seriously slashed and almost severed leg of an injured party until the medics arrived.  But talking about it still causes me some queasiness.)

When it came time to pursue university, I announced I was going to be a Psychologist, picking the closest thing to Medicine that one could pursue without having to have the marks for medical school.  Things were going well until the ‘love’ bug hit me and I wanted to get on with my ability to earn money so I could marry.  So, instead, I took the shortest route to a profession and attained, after my arts degree in Psychology, an education degree in Counseling.  That worked and from there it was only a matter of time before I left teaching for greener pastures in the world of Corporate Human Resources.  I am sure each reader could go through a similar description of what he or she thought they wanted to be and why they never got there.  I recommend the exercise highly as a means of knowing yourself just a little better.   Would I have been good at a preacher, a doctor, or a psychologist?  Chances are good, I am told.  And you know, in the course of life even today, in two out of those three, I often act in that capacity to the extent the laws allow.  I am confident you would find the same thing in your case if you chose to thing about it.

I contend that sometimes the reason or reasons for us not to become what we could have or should have become is/are most inane.  Why is it so absurd, as Howells suggests, for a rich person to paint for money?  Or, why is it so absurd for a rich person to paint for nothing?  It isn’t if we don’t want it to be.  The problem is we are apt to follow or be dictated to by the absurd thoughts and feelings of society or our parents and thus miss out on what we may have been good at or more importantly, what we really may have enjoyed doing.  And did I really have an aversion to blood that could not have easily been overcome with practice? -- Who knows?  Was my lack of higher marks not something that could be changed? – Of course it could have been.  Was I not able to satisfy my desire to marry early and still finish my graduate Psychology degree? – Yes, many married couples spend their first few years of marriage putting one of the two through school.  No, the more I think about it, the more I realize what is really absurd in Corey’s case is that he did not paint at all.  Perhaps it is much akin to the absurdity of why many of us did not follow the interests and passions of our youth that we could have followed with some boldness and perseverance.

I do not want to end this piece without pointing out a discovery that we have all likely made at one point or another in our lives.  And that is that when asked as adults what we would rather be doing today in the way of a profession, we seldom respond with any of the things that we thought we wanted to do as a young child or even as a teenager.  In my case, if I had my druthers today, I would want to be either a lawyer or an advertising genius.  My life experience has told me that it is really lawyers that rule the world albeit badly and it is creative advertising that has the greatest influence on people.  I love intellectual challenge which both of these professions provide.  I didn’t know that about myself when I was six or sixteen.  I bet you would find the same thing if you did likewise – your view of what is most worthy of doing now is different than what it was early in your existence.

But when all is said and done, what really matters is not so much what we have or what we do, but really true success is measured by who we are as a person and how we see ourselves.  Fortunate is the man or woman that has found him- or her-self by knowing his or her Creator and being contend with what he or she does with, and through, Him.

More on One of My Pet Peeves: Why Most Educators Are Ignorant.

I was a teacher, I married a teacher, her father was a teacher, and one of my daughter's was a teacher and in some respect, still is an educator.  So don't tell me I don't know anything about education and the usual line, "until you walk a mile in their shoes, don't criticize".    Sorry folks, done that, been there -- in reverse order, of course, to be more correct.

For some time now, I have been pointing out the stupidity of educators.   But less I be totally misunderstood -- it's not always teachers I am after.   Usually it's mainly bad teachers and those from that group that get promoted to the ranks of administrators (because they're not so hot in the classroom).

Oh well, you decide for yourself.  Read the story along with other similar ones people share along this line.  Then ask yourself, "why is it that we're seeing more and more stupidity from the education sector these days?"   Is there really a plot to make us all stupid?

Seems to me I remember an old adage that goes like this:  Those that can do; those that can't teach; and those that can't teach, teach others how to teach.   I think it's still applicable.

More Proof That Some Educators Are Just Plain Dumb

Unless I am totally missing something here folks, this school administrator needs to see a counselor.  Help me out.  Wouldn't every school administrator want a young male student to say exactly this to all the girls in the school.   This is a god-sent message.   It's such a no-brainer to want to support this.  What am I missing?  HELP!

This is totally unbelievable -- that it is happening in 2012 in America today. How ignorant can educators really be? Read this and you'll find out. With all the information and disasters we've had with respect to residential schools and the treatment of our Native Americans and Canadian Aboriginals -- you would have thought someone in this Catholic school organization would have ensured this kind of ignorance had been erased. But no. It's still there.

Just Keep Letting Obama, Harper and Others Pour Your Tax Dollars into Planned Parenthood so they can teach your 10-year old the "Pleasures of Sex".

You heard me right. This is totally ridiculous. Totally unacceptable. But what is truly immoral is the fact that they think they can accomplish this and that our governments are actually supporting this group to do "anything" in the world. I believe that Planned Parenthood support should become a real issue of the election. As a minimum, Americans can make it that with their own votes. Take a look, start pulling your hair out, and get ready to fight for your children and grand-children.

Hey Canada Look -- Our Supreme Court Thinks Its American.

Here we go, Canada. Our Supreme Court with its decision today telling parents they cannot take their kids out of "Ethics and Religious Culture" course in Quebec, may as well have been appointed by the great Obama down south.

Unfortunately, I don't think the CCCC's have gone far enough in their commentary on this ruling. For example, I don't object to "comparative religion" as it is a parents and grandparents job to pass on their faith to children and grandkids.

What I do object to, though, is if indeed the "course" assumes or projects the idea that what I believe in is simply "legends" or "myths". At the very least the course needs to be neutral and say, "Christians believe that . . . ". I wonder if the CCCC's made that argument or whether they went for the right of parents to withdraw children instead and ended up losing the baby with the bathwater. Just wondering. You be the judge.

Either way, you need to realize what is going on in America today. Bottom line: Muslims complain about anything that is Christian in American public schools and to compensate, American schools seem to be embracing at least singing songs which state "there is no truth except Allah". Go figure. Better still go pray and then get involved.

Why We May All Need an "Apple" to take to School.

I'm passing on this article because I want all parents and grandparents to take notes. This is important stuff. It looks like the Big "Apple" -- no, I don't mean New York City -- I mean Apple Inc. is a pretty shrewd business. Now, they have set their eyes on the "electronic textbook business" and they've got deals with three big publishers that handle 90% of textbooks sold in the U.S. That's big.

Everybody at school will need Apple iPad and then they'll need Apple i-texts to use for their courses; and no, you can't sell them to your kid sister when she takes the same course next year. (Smart of Apple.)

The world is changing. So think about what you're spending your money on . . . when it comes to your kids and grand-kids. They about their educational needs down the road. They want us to ask a child, "Which gender pronoun do you prefer we use for you?" Coming to California and then to your school.

"Gender liberation" is now the new push for the GLBT agenda. It claims we MUST 'liberate' children from unnecessary 'stereotypes'. God must have made a mistake when He (dare I say) made us male and female.

And while we're at it, let's designate restrooms (in schools?) as "gender neutral". And they're doing it all in the name of . . . wait for it, . . . ah yes, the old, "let's be more tolerant of differences" rationale.

Student 'bullied, humiliated' by teacher because they can't support homosexual lifestyle.

Wondering what a Catholic School Board Does with Sex Education & Homosexuality?

Recently I wrote a blog about what the Toronto District School Board is telling their teachers they must teach your children and grandchildren about six different genders.  Well, a good friend of mine read my blog and sent me a very different picture of what is going on in the Catholic School systems -- in the same district of Toronto mind you.  But I bet that your district's Catholic schools have a much similar approach.  The stark difference will astound you.   Here, with names and other I.D. taken out, I'm sharing with you what he had to say.   Remember, he's an excellent, knowledgeable (as you'll see from what he adds) and committed Catholic and I'm the Protestant that sends my grandchildren to public schools.   He writes:

"As I mentioned to you, my daughter goes to her constitutionally established, publicly funded, religious education school. The TCDSB website is at: www.tcdsb.org and you can use the search to see what they’ve got.

"Here’s a link to the Board’s Religious Education/Family Life page:
http://www.tcdsb.org/religionfamilylife/. Lots of interesting stuff for you there. The program used in the elementary schools is called “Fully Alive” and one of the early topics is “God created us male and female”. We don’t seem to have the 6 genders which the public board has.

"One of the interesting things is a sex ed curriculum from XYZ high school which is the boys school on ABC avenue just west of DEF avenue. Here’s the link (and you can figure out the school from that):

"Here’s the Catechism of the Catholic Church on homosexuality:

"I don’t live under the illusion that people identifying themselves as Catholic Christians follow Church teaching fully. We’re supposed to.  We separate ourselves from the Church if we don’t but some people make that choice. They’re called the “cafeteria Catholics” because they pick and choose which parts of Church teaching they’ll follow. I’m sure we have some teachers who would love to have programs reflecting those in the public board but thankfully they don’t carry the day. We discuss family/health/sexuality issues with our children and they've got a wonderfully formed education and conscience in these areas. They know that homosexuals exist, we don’t  know why they’re homosexuals, they’re people created in the image and likeness of God and we are called to love them. They also know that the acts are wrong if only from the point that God created life and only in the union of man and woman can we participate in that creation."

And then he gives me a sincere wish, "Good luck with the grand kids."  I can only say, I'll need more than luck.   No wonder people are doing everything they can to get their kids into the Catholic school system, at least in Ontario.

Schools & Homosexual Education Plus -- The Actual Curriculum You Need to Know About

I have given you a link to the Toronto District School Board's "Challenging Homophobia and Heterosexism: A K-12 Curriculum Resource Guide, 2011".  It is 223 pages long so I don't expect you to read it.  But let me share with you just a few things you'll find there.  And remember, yes, this is about Toronto -- but most school boards in North America are already there or following suit.  Unless, you can do something about it.   Here are "some" of the highlights only:

1.  For starters, look at the name of the report -- it makes no bones about "fighting (they say challenging) heterosexism".   That's funny, why would they want to challenge something that God ordained?  But they do.  That's enough to tell you the report is faulty from a foundational point of view.  It clearly has a GLBT agenda.

2.  And wait, it is not just about GLBT -- that would be four categories or sexes.  No, the report introduces your kids and my grandkids to six genders.  Just go to page two of the actual report PDF (page numbers are at the bottom right of each PDF page) and you'll see them all: lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans-gendered, two-spirited, and queer (LGBTQ) students.  Further down that page they admit their purpose and say it is to render equity to all gender identities and all sexual orientations -- equity mind you.

3. And remember the guide is for education aimed at levels from kindergarten (5 year olds plus) to grade 12 (17 year olds).   Furthermore, still on the same page, it points out that the guide is an "essential tool" to help teachers achieve their teaching "responsibility" to this philosophy that the Ontario government and the Toronto School Board seem to have.

4. Take a look at page 3 and read what they say "Anti-homophobia education is not".  They say it won't 'corrupt' children.  They say it won't 'encourage' children to become one of the six genders.  Heck I'm 64 and I didn't know there were six genders until I read this.  Telling kids they now have six genders to actually choose from is absolutely both corrupting them and encouraging them.

5.  On page 5, they call the whole curriculum "Ethical and Inclusive Pedagogy".  Really, these folks don't have a clue about "absolute ethics" -- absolute ethics come from God alone.  This curriculum is anything but ethical.   It's not even truly inclusive because it certainly alienates a great percentage of parents and students.

6. On page 9 they make it clear that a teacher can't refrain from teaching this curriculum because of fear of parental negative reaction.  But of course, we have teachers and principals all over the place province making concessions like cancelling "Christmas Concerts" or letting kids sing "Merry Christmas" because one or two or nine parents will object and react negatively.  So, so much for this bunk as an argument.

7.  Further down in the same section the report indicates schools and teachers are not to send notes home with students as a 'heads up' of what is going to be covered and that children cannot be excused from these classes on the basis of 'religion' (see p. 10 of report).  They have found a way to ensure that by saying it would violate the Ontario Human Rights Act.  Really???   And neither can teachers object to teaching it based on their 'religious beliefs'.

8. The next fifteen pages are dedicated to information about the GBLT -- their flag, famous gays and lesbians, etc., celebration days, history, archives, and much more.

9.  Then there's a section on how to promote this teaching in the classroom and in the halls, etc. and how to prepare the class (up to page 31).

10. On page 34 teachers are expected to tell children in Junior Kindergarten "what makes up a family" and introduce them to other types of families much different then the ones the majority of them know and experience.  And then tell them all are good alternatives.  Give me a break.  Please.  And it's downhill from there.  On page 37 at the bottom teachers are told to have children role play the opposite sex.

11. On page 53 and following, children from kindergarten and up are introduced to the Pride Week events.  Really?  Yes, really.  On page 56, kids are assigned in groups and asked to role play different same-sex families among other arrangements.  And so far this is primarily for up to grade 3.

12.  Let's now move to Grades 4 to 6 (Junior Level).  Well, no, second thought.  Let's not.  I'm getting sick.  But you can find it all from page 54 to 89  Just to give you a taste, on page 73, teachers are instructed to provide these young students with "a basic knowledge of gay and lesbian vocabulary". On page 81 we read these words: "This activity is meant as a culminating activity in teaching students about gay/lesbian and bisexual issues and homophobia."  Of course, they claim they can do all this without teaching kids about GBLT sex.   Gee, they're good.  I guess they just won't answer the hot questions kids will have.

13. Pages 90 to 154 tell teachers what to tell the Intermediate level (grade 7) and up to the senior level (grade 12) -- typically 12 year olds and up.  The first activity in this section "is designed for students to explore their diverse social identities."  How nice,  they're going to help our children figure out if they're GLBT or one of the other two sexes.  And gee I thought the doctor told us that when they were born.

14.  On page 100, another activity "provides multiple opportunities for a facilitated discussion on whether being LGBTQ is a choice and how the choice to “come out” can help or hurt you in different situations."  Guess what they determine?  Your kids now have some choices in this regard.

15. Page 107 says the teacher will talk to your kids and discuss the following questions and issues:
"What are the situations where it is most difficult to be gay or lesbian?"
'You can’t choose to be gay or straight but you can choose to ‘come out’. Why do you think some people ‘come out’ when they are 14 and others ‘come out’ when they are 40?"  Oh joy.  They may as well ask "and when are you going to come out?"

16.  There are numerous questions that are supposedly intended to help teachers/students get the "temperature" of your kids' school with respect to homophobia.  Here's one of them from p. 130: "When a social event or activity is being planned (e.g. a school dance, the sending of candy grams or flowers on Valentine’s Day), does the organizing committee and school in general consider how this event/activity can be made safe for LGBTQ students?"  And many many more promoting GBLT, etc. lifestyles including this one: "Would two male students or two female students be able to walk hand in hand in your school safely and comfortably?" (page 133)  Man, I'm not sure a boy and a girl should do that in the school, let alone two boys -- this is a place I send my grandchildren to learn, not to 'work on their sexual-social relationships'.

17.  On page 140, teachers are advised to "Have fun! Gender identity and sexual diversity are open to a lot of respectful play."  Yeah really.  Says who?

Have you heard enough.  You'll need to find out all the activities that they recommend on your own.  It's tragic.  Pages 155 to 165 give you lists and lists of available organizations willing to help you fight homophobia and promote the six alternative genders.   Can't believe we have so many of them, many of which are supported by your tax dollars at various levels.  Pages 166 to 206 give us literally hundreds, maybe more, books, DVD's, Videos, etc. -- all resources to help us beat homophobia and promote GLBT, etc.   Oh, these people are so helpful.   Pages 207 to 211 give you a wonderful GBLT dictionary of terms.  Yes, you'll get very educated here.

18. On page 212 you can read about what teachers are being told about your rights as a parent when it comes to all this. You don't have any, they say.

Unbelievable.  But I thought you needed to know this.  This is the environment you're sending your children to next time you send them to school now and in 2012 and beyond.  Know the facts.  Know the chances.  Know what's right and what's wrong for your child.

May I respectfully suggest you get some parents together and talk about this.  May I suggest that you share it with others in your church, synagogue, temple, or mosque.  May I suggest you pray hard each day about how this teaching will impact your child or grand-child.  May I suggest you think about how you vote when it comes to the school board and the provincial government next time around.  And while you're at it -- how about writing to your school trustee.  In Toronto, you can find their contacts by ward number and a direct email link at: http://www.tdsb.on.ca/boardroom/trustees/ .

Tolerance - Yes. Forced gay-straight clubs - No.

It's not only gays that get bullied in our schools. Jews do. Many immigrants do. Christians do.

The answer to the problem is not forced "mixed" clubs such as the premier of Ontario suggests. It's something called "respect for all" as part of proper character formation.

The author of the link below suggests the premier is doing the bullying in this case.

Toronto School Board Has Lost Its Marbles and Bans Its Balls

I've had it with the Toronto School Board. They've lost all sense of reality and responsibility. They need to resign as a body. This year, they've had the controversy over the Muslim prayers (Muslims can pray in our schools, but not Christians). Then there is the issue of "form letter" type of report cards that say nothing really helpful to any parent for knowing exactly how well his/her child is doing in any subject. This year also, or was it last year, they removed all sorts of playgrounds just in case some child got hurt playing in it. (In case you missed it -- playgrounds are not for playing.) And now, the "piece de resistance" -- they want to ban balls -- you heard me right. These people are crazy.

And what exactly are they resisting -- ah, the truth is they are doing all they can to avoid being sued. Now, I'm close enough to the school system and what happens on a daily basis that I can tell you that such a fear is legitimate, to a great extent.

So, what to do? Well, for starters the provincial government (with the support of the feds) should do whatever it needs to in order to pass legislation that protects school boards from litigation against frivolous lawsuits against them such as would result from a kid who hurts himself while playing a game. How ridiculous.   This insanity has to be stopped but the Board can't do it all alone.

Anyway, here's the link for you to enjoy the entertaining rhetoric of Rex Murphy on the topic via video. He's good. And in the meantime, tell your child or grandchild that all he/she can do at recess or lunchtime is breath.
