The Book: A Runtamuffin Tale
The Author: Melissa Taylor
Beautiful Illustrations: Marc Beauregard
Self-published, 2017, USA
This is a fanciful tale about a chicken named Runtamuffin who is made to feel special because she is the smallest of a brood of chicks. It tells the story of her life on the farm and the many animals she finds there. At times the story is told from the point of view of the people and at other times from the different animal’s perspective but most of the time Runti (as she is called for short) is the central figure. Taylor introduces the reader to various aspects of farm life which is interesting and educational for children who live in the city and have no experience with living in a country setting. This feature of the story would benefit greatly with more explanation of the events as they happen. It is obvious from the way she writes that Taylor has grown up with animals, loves them and can easily personify them. I would recommend this for any child who loves animals and stories about them. It might also inspire a love of animals in children who haven’t shown an interest yet or who have no experience with them. All in all, it is a charming tale and it held the attention of my three-year-old granddaughter.
